Photograph of a Nganga, a very powerful religious item in the Congolese religion Palo-mayombe. The Nganga is a consecrated vessel filled with sacred earth, sticks, human remains, bones, and other items. A ritual sacrifice is typically part of the creation of a Nganga. Each Nganga is inhabited by a spirit, or Nfumbe, who acts as a guide for religious activities performed with the vessel.
From my understanding, the Nfumbe is basically trapped inside of the vessel, and pretty much does the owner’s bidding, from helping to find a lost object to killing an enemy, and everything in between.
I really should have been a cultural anthropologist. I love magic and mysticism.
